There are many different ways to write a dance. 
People have been finding ways to record dance for a long time. 
Many smart people have added to these tools over the years. 
Technology has also changed how we write down dance. 
Dance notation is the symbolic representation of human movement and form. 
To create a dance score, a writer must translate motion into code. The notation system acts as the language for this translation. One method might use symbols to show where a limb moves. Another might map the path a dancer takes across the floor. Some systems focus on the specific rotation of bones. This allows a person to read the score and reconstruct the dance. This process is used in ethnochoreology, which is the study of dance in different cultures. By using these tools, dancers can perform technical exercises or complex choreography accurately.
There are many different types of notation systems available. Some are broad and designed to capture all human movement. Labanotation, also known as Kinetography Laban, is a very well-known system. Benesh Movement Notation is another popular system used in Western culture. Other broad systems include Eshkol-Wachman Movement Notation and DanceWriting. However, many systems are designed for very specific styles of dance. For example, Morris Dance Notation is used specifically for Morris dance. There is also Shorthand Dance Notation for dances from Israel. These specific systems often cannot effectively describe other types of dance.
History shows that notation has evolved alongside dance itself. In the 1680s, Pierre Beauchamp invented a system for Baroque dance. This method is known as Beauchamp–Feuillet notation. Raoul Auger Feuillet published this system in 1700. It was used to record dances throughout the eighteenth century. In 1892, Vladimir Ivanovich Stepanov created a different notation method. His work led to the creation of the Sergeyev Collection. This collection is a famous set of dance scores. It documents the repertoire of the Imperial Ballet from the turn of the 20th century. This includes original designs for Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
Many researchers and artists have contributed to these methods. In 1934, Joseph Schillinger created a highly accurate system. His notation was based on 3D bone rotation and translation. At that time, motion capture technology did not yet exist. In 1948, Hanya Holm became a pioneer in dance law. She was the first Broadway choreographer to copyright her dance scores. In 1951, Stanley D. Kahn published Kahnotation for tap dance. In 1956, Rudolf and Joan Benesh published Benesh Movement Notation. This system is still widely used for restaging dance works today.
Different cultures have developed their own unique ways to record movement. In 1969, Theodor Vasilescu published a system for Romanian folk dances. During the 1970s, U Chang-sop developed the Chamo System of Dance Notation. This system uses pictorially based symbols for Korean dance. In 1975, Ann Hutchinson Guest used La Sténochorégraphie to reconstruct a ballet. She used the method of Arthur Saint-Léon to recreate his 1844 work, Pas de Six. More recently, Felipe Hsieh created Tango Notation in 2017. This system is specifically designed for Argentine tango.
Technology has also played a major role in the development of notation. In 1982, Eddie Dombrower created the first computerized system. It was called DOM, which stands for Dance on Microprocessor. This system was designed for Apple II computers. It displayed an animated figure on the screen. This figure performed the moves specified by the choreographer. This was a major step in how we visualize and record human motion. Modern digital tools continue to build on these early computer foundations.
