It is much more than just sound; it is a way to celebrate and share stories. Ancient Egyptians even believed that gods like Bat and Ihy invented music. The goddess Hathor was also linked to music and was shown as a cow. Music helped people connect with their traditions and their gods. Today, Egypt remains a huge center for music in the Middle East.

In the very early days, people used small shells as whistles. Later, during the Old Kingdom, people played arched harps and flutes. By the Middle Kingdom, orchestras added lutes and cymbals to their groups. In the Middle Ages, singers often used a special, quavering voice. They also used distinct enunciation to make their songs clear. Modern music often blends these old traditions with new sounds. This creates a mix of local styles and pop music.

Music has a long and interesting history in Egypt.

Female musicians, called Awalim, were highly respected and well-paid. They often sang at celebrations in the homes of wealthy people. In the 19th century, a new street music style called Hasaballah began. It used brass instruments like the trumpet and trombone. This folk music became a popular part of family events.

Shaabi is a very popular style for the working class. You can hear it at weddings, festivals, and even on buses. A newer style called Mahraganat uses loud electronic and hip-hop sounds. On the northern coast, people play the simsimiyya. This is a stringed instrument that has roots in ancient times. In Upper Egypt, musicians play a folk style known as Sa‘īdi. These musicians sometimes travel to Europe to perform their traditional songs.
