People recognize Spanish music for many different styles. You might hear the famous flamenco from the south. In the north-west, you can hear the sound of bagpipes. The jota is a popular style in the center and north. These traditions matter because they show the history of the land. Music in Spain has helped shape classical and Latin American music too.

The vihuela was a string instrument used for beautiful songs. Composers like Luis de Milán wrote music specifically for it. During this time, people also used the organ for music. Spanish composers often traveled to places like Italy and Germany. They brought new musical knowledge back home to Spain. This helped spread many new styles across the country.

One special form is called zarzuela. This is a type of opera that uses spoken words. It became very famous after the year 1850. Many people also loved the sound of the classical guitar. Composers like Francisco Tárrega wrote wonderful music for it. These styles helped keep Spanish musical culture alive and growing.

In the 1900s, music changed again with new pop styles.

The yé-yé movement started in the mid-1960s. It used catchy melodies and rhythms that were easy to dance to. Young female singers, called "chicas yéyé," became huge stars. Even during hard times with strict rules, music found ways to shine. The Benidorm International Song Festival gave many singers a chance to perform. Today, Spanish music continues to connect people through many different sounds.
