It brings together singing, dancing, and music into one experience. This art grew from the gitano people in the Andalusia region. Gitanos are part of the Romani ethnic group. They helped make flamenco a professional art. Today, it is a way for people to share their culture.

UNESCO even named it a masterpiece of human heritage in 2010.

Many different sounds and moves come together in flamenco. The music uses special scales from Northern India. These arrived in Spain when the Romani people migrated there. The art also has roots in Arab-Andalusian music. This includes traditions from the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa. You might see people using wooden castanets or tambourines.

People have studied the history of flamenco for a long time. One of the oldest records of the music is from 1774. It was found in a book called Las Cartas Marruecas. In the 1800s, people went to special places called café cantantes.

Silverio Franconetti opened the first singer café in Seville in 1881. These cafes were very important for the art. They helped singers become professionals and create new styles.

Flamenco has changed a lot over the years. Between 1920 and 1955, big shows were called flamenco opera.

These shows were held in large theaters and even bullrings. This helped the music spread to many cities around the world. Some people tried to keep the music very pure. In 1922, Federico García Lorca helped organize a contest in Granada. He wanted to protect the deepest roots of the music. The contest winners were a man named El Tenazas and a young boy named Manolo Caracol.

Even though it has a long history, flamenco is still very much alive.
