Flamenco is a complex and expressive art form from southern Spain.

It combines music, song, and dance into a single performance. This art grew from the gitano subculture in the Andalusia region. Gitanos are people of the Romani ethnicity. They played a major role in creating and professionalizing the genre. Today, flamenco is recognized globally as a significant cultural tradition. In 2010, UNESCO declared it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The music of flamenco is built on unique rhythmic and melodic structures. It uses specific musical scales, such as the E Phrygian scale, to create its distinct sound.

The rhythm is often guided by a complex pattern called a compas.

Performers use various instruments to support the singers and dancers. These can include wooden castanets or tambourines, which likely originated during the Al-Andalus period. The art involves a convergence of urban groups and marginalized communities. These groups established flamenco as a singular art form marked by the gitano brand.

Flamenco is organized into different styles known as palos.

These palos represent the many varieties of flamenco music and dance. Some styles are considered deep and serious, while others are more festive. For example, cantiñas and fandangos are lighter styles. During the era of flamenco opera, these lighter airs became very popular. This period saw the rise of personal versions of many different songs. The different palos allow artists to express a wide range of human emotions.

The history of flamenco is a story of cultural mixing. The Romani people migrated from Northern India to Andalusia in the 15th century. They brought North Indian scales, bells, and a large repertoire of songs. Once in Spain, they encountered the Arab-Andalusian music culture. This culture was a hybrid of Spanish traditions and influences from North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. This long period of intermingling formed the deep roots of flamenco. The oldest written record of flamenco music is from 1774 in a book titled Las Cartas Marruecas.

In the 19th century, the social setting for flamenco changed significantly. In 1881, Silverio Franconetti opened the first café cantante in Seville.

These singer cafés provided a competitive environment for performers. This competition helped cantaores, or professional singers, emerge as specialists. The public also helped shape the genre by influencing its themes and techniques. This era helped move flamenco from a folk tradition toward a professional art.

Between 1920 and 1955, the genre entered the era of flamenco opera. During this time, shows were held in large theaters and bullrings. This was an economic strategy because variety shows paid 10% while opera paid only 3%. This period allowed flamenco to spread to major cities worldwide. However, some critics worried about the loss of purity. In 1922, Federico García Lorca and Manuel de Falla organized a cante jondo contest in Granada. They wanted to protect the deepest roots of the art. The contest winners were El Tenazas and a young boy named Manolo Caracol.

Flamenco has faced many challenges throughout its history. During the Spanish Civil War, many singers faced exile or death. In the postwar period, the genre was viewed with suspicion by authorities. Eventually, the regime adopted flamenco as a symbol of Spanish culture. Today, the art is studied academically through musicology and anthropology. It is also taught in formal settings, such as the Rafael Orozco Superior Conservatory of Music.
