People all over the world still love to practice it today. It is more than just moving to a beat. It is a way to connect with others through a shared skill.

Dancers can move in several different ways depending on the style. Some people use a close embrace where they hold each other very tightly.

This is common in the Argentine tango or the milonguero style. Other dancers prefer an open embrace to have more space. This allows them to perform long, elegant steps or complex footwork.

Stage performers might even add gymnastic lifts, kicks, or drops to their routine. These different ways of moving make the dance very exciting to watch.

The history of tango began in the 1880s. It started near the Río de la Plata, which is the border between Argentina and Uruguay.

It grew in working-class areas like Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The dance was shaped by many different cultures. It used music from the Argentine Milonga and the Uruguayan Candombe. It also included influences from African and European traditions. This mix of cultures made the dance very unique and new.

Tango spread across the world around the year 1900.

It first became a big craze in European cities like Paris and London. By the end of 1913, it even reached New York City and Finland. In the United States, the word "tango" was sometimes used for different types of dances. Some people in the past thought the dance was too bold for public places. This caused a lot of surprise and even some trouble in cities like Paris.

Today, you can hear many different kinds of tango music. Some traditional music uses the bandoneón, which is a type of tango accordion.

A newer style called tango nuevo mixes tango with electronic music. Musicians like Ástor Piazzolla helped change how the music sounds. This new style helps attract younger dancers to the tradition. Whether it is old or new, tango continues to change and grow. It stays a very important part of life for many people.
