Many cultures helped shape the dance. It has roots in African and European traditions. It also grew from local music like Milonga and Candombe.

In the early days, tango was very new. It spread from poor areas to big cities. By 1900, it moved to Europe. It became popular in Paris and London. Some people thought the dance was too bold for public.

There are many ways to dance tango. Some dancers use a close embrace. This means they hold each other tight. Other styles use an open embrace. This lets dancers move with big, elegant steps. Stage dancers may even do kicks or lifts.

Music for tango can change too. Some music uses a bandoneón. This is a type of tango accordion. New styles mix tango with electronic beats. This is called tango nuevo.
