This music is very important to the people who make it. It represents all the different peoples living in the Arab world today. It is a rich way for people to share their culture.

Many types of music use a system called the maqam. A maqam is a way to organize musical tones. You can use maqams for singing or for playing instruments. They do not include a rhythmic part.

Musicians also use instruments like the oud, which is a wooden instrument with strings. In the past, singers used simple compositions. They would often sing in just one maqam at a time. Some famous early songs included the huda and the nasb.

This music has a very long history. In the pre-Islamic period, between the 5th and 7th centuries, poets were very important. These poets were called shu`ara' al-Jahiliyah. They recited poems using very high notes.

In Yemen, musicians were supported by the Kings of Sabaʹ. Later, famous thinkers like Al-Kindi studied music theory. He identified twelve tones on the Arabic musical scale. He based these tones on where fingers sit on the oud strings.

Music has changed a lot over the years. In the 20th century, Cairo became a center for new musical ideas.

Arabic music has also influenced music in other parts of the world. Many European instruments have roots in Arabic ones. For example, the lute shares an ancestor with the oud.
