In Mahayana Buddhism, music is a special offering to the Buddhas. This is similar to offering flowers, light, or water. Making these offerings is believed to bring good merit. Some believe music is a "skillful means" to help people learn. It can guide followers toward the Buddhist path and its teachings. Some stories even describe the Pure Lands as being filled with divine music.

Views on music have changed throughout history.

Early Buddhist texts sometimes had negative views of music. The Buddha sometimes warned that music could be a distraction. He said it might cause people to become attached to sounds. This could make it harder to find peace or focus during meditation. Some rules for monks and nuns even prohibited listening to music. They felt it was too connected to worldly pleasures.

However, other parts of the tradition are very positive.
