This means that Buddhist culture looks different depending on where it is practiced. In places like Thailand, it is shaped by many different forces. These include the Theravada school from Sri Lanka and Hindu beliefs from Cambodia.

Buddhist art has changed a lot over many centuries. In the beginning, artists used an aniconic phase. This means they did not show the Buddha as a human being. Instead, they used symbols like footprints or an empty throne to represent him. Around the 1st century CE, the art moved into an iconic phase. This is when artists began to give the Buddha realistic human features and proportions.

This art spread into different branches, like the Northern branch in East Asia and the Southern branch in Southeast Asia.

Architecture is also a very important part of this culture. There are three main types of buildings that people associate with early Buddhism. The first is the stupa, which is a dome-shaped monument. Stupas were often used to hold holy relics or to remember important facts.

The second type is the vihara, which is a monastery where monks live. The third type is the chaitya, which is a large hall used for meetings. These buildings were used to help the growing number of monks and followers.

Music and chanting play a big role in daily life and ceremonies. Some music is used for meditation or to help people feel calm. People use many different instruments like drums, bells, and singing bowls.

In some places, like Tibet, music even includes song and dance. Chanting is also very common. It can be used to recite sacred texts or to celebrate special festivals. These sounds are often meant to be soft and pure to help clear the mind.

Food and how people work are also part of Buddhist culture. Many Buddhists follow a vegetarian diet. This is because they believe in being kind and not hurting living things. In China, this kind of food is called zhāi cài.

Even the way people earn money is part of their beliefs. This is often called Buddhist economics. It focuses on living a simple and purposeful life. The goal is to help people feel well rather than just trying to buy many things.
