Ramanuja was a central figure in Indian history and religious thought. He was a philosopher, a guru, and a social reformer. He lived many centuries ago in South India. Traditional accounts suggest he lived from 1017 to 1137. However, modern scholars using temple records suggest a different timeline. They believe he likely lived from 1077 to 1157.

He is most famous for leading the Sri Vaishnavism tradition. This tradition is a major branch of Hinduism. Ramanuja provided the logical foundation for the Bhakti movement. This movement focuses on intense, personal devotion to a god.

His philosophy is known as Vishishtadvaita, or qualified non-dualism. This idea explains the relationship between the individual soul and the ultimate reality. In this system, the individual soul is called the Ātman. The ultimate reality is called Brahman. Ramanuja taught that there is a distinction between the two. He believed that souls are unique and separate from Brahman. However, he also taught that all souls share a unity. He believed that souls have the potential to realize their identity with Brahman.

This was a different view than the Advaita Vedānta tradition. Advaita Vedānta teaches a strict non-dualism where no distinction exists.

To understand his teachings, one must understand the concept of bhakti. Bhakti is the practice of devotion to a personal god. For Ramanuja, this god was Vishnu. He argued that bhakti is the essential path to spiritual liberation. This liberation is often called moksha. Moksha is the release from the cycle of samsara. Ramanuja disagreed with thinkers who viewed God as an abstract, quality-less being. He used the term saguna Vishnu to describe a god with personal qualities. He argued that when scriptures describe God as having no qualities, they mean God lacks pain, sorrow, or age.

Life for Ramanuja involved many significant transitions and challenges. He was born into a Tamil Brahmin community in Sriperumbudur. He later moved to Kānchipuram to study under a guru named Yādava Prakāśa. The two men often disagreed on how to interpret the Upanishads. These are sacred Vedic texts. After separating from his guru, Ramanuja sought further guidance. He was eventually initiated into the Sri Vaishnava order by a scholar named Mahapurna. This initiation involved the Panchasamskaras, which are five specific sacraments.

His career as a leader also faced political difficulties. Some hagiographies, which are biographies of holy people, tell of a Chola king named Kulothunga II. This king was also called Krimikanta Chola. The records suggest he had great hatred toward the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Because of this, Ramanuja's disciple, Koorathazhwan, urged him to leave the kingdom. Ramanuja spent 14 years in the Hoysala kingdom for safety. During this time, he helped build the temple of Lord Thirunarayanaswamy at Melukote. He even helped a local king, Bitti Deva, join the Hindu faith.

Ramanuja is also remembered for his work as a social reformer. He fought against the unfair treatment caused by the caste system. He wanted to include people who were often excluded from religious life. He referred to these groups as Tirukulattar, meaning "of noble descent." He encouraged these people to seek spiritual enlightenment through the Alvārs' songs. He also changed how rituals were handled in the Srirangam temple. These changes allowed non-Brahmin people to participate in worship. This helped increase the social status of groups like the weavers.

His influence can still be seen in many parts of India today. The Sri Vaishnava community eventually split into two groups. These are the Vadakalai and the Tenkalai sects. Even though they differ, both sects use the Pancha Samskara ceremony. Ramanuja's ideas competed with other major philosophies of the 2nd millennium. These included the Dvaita philosophy of Madhvāchārya and the Advaita philosophy of Ādi Shankara. Together, these three schools shaped the history of Vedantic thought. His life and his logic continue to guide millions of people in their spiritual journeys.
