As a teenager, Madhva became a Sanyasi, which is a monk. He joined a monastery in Udupi. His teacher was named Achyutapreksha. Madhva studied many old books about philosophy. He did not agree with everything he learned. He felt that the human soul and God were not the same. He started his own way of thinking called Dvaita. This is also called dualism. It means that the soul and God are two different things. The soul depends on God, who is Vishnu.

Madhva was a very busy writer. He wrote thirty-seven works in the Sanskrit language. His writing style was very short and direct. One of his most important books is the Anuvyakhyana. This book is a supplement to his work on the Brahma Sutras. He also wrote about the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. Some people say he claimed to be an avatar of Vayu. Vayu is the wind god and the son of Vishnu. Some scholars wonder if his writings were inspired by divine feelings.

His ideas changed how people thought about religion. His Dvaita school influenced the Bhakti movement in India. This movement focuses on devotion to God. Many of his students continued his work for a long time. These students included thinkers like Jayatirtha and Vyasatirtha. Madhva also taught about how we gain knowledge. He said there are three ways to know things. These are perception, inference, and reliable words. His teachings remain a big part of Indian philosophy today.
