Vedic chant is a very old way of reciting sacred songs. This tradition is often called the oldest unbroken oral tradition in existence. People have passed these sounds down by speaking them rather than writing them. The texts, known as samhitas, date back to about 800 BC. This was around the same time as the poet Homer. On November 7, 2008, UNESCO named this tradition a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

To keep the chants perfect, people use eleven different ways to recite them. These methods are called pathas. Some styles are simple, like the Samhita-patha, which is a continuous recitation. Others are more complex, like the Krama-patha, where words are paired in a step-by-step pattern. There are eight complex styles called Vikrutipathas that involve reversing the word order. One of the hardest styles is the Ghana-patha. It is called the "Bell" mode because the words repeat back and forth like a bell.

Learning these chants takes a lot of hard work and energy. Students start with simple methods before they try the harder ones. They must master four specific tones during their chanting. These tones include a middle tone, a lower tone, a higher tone, and a high tone extended. Scholars who have mastered these difficult pathas are called pathins. A person who reaches the most advanced level is called a ghanapaathin.

Ancient Indian culture used these many styles to act as a cross-check. By reciting the same text in different ways, people could ensure no mistakes were made. For example, the Rigveda has 1,028 hymns and 10,600 verses. Every single one of these was preserved using these special methods. This careful work kept the word order and the sounds exactly the same. This helped the knowledge travel from one generation to the next with great accuracy.

Many people believe the power of these chants lives in their sound. Some thinkers believe the entire universe began with a single sound. They use these sacred sounds to help with spiritual growth and purification. Because the sounds are so important, the chants are hard to capture on paper. A printed page cannot show the tiny changes in tone or melody. To truly understand the essence, one must hear a person performing the chant.
