It is known as the fourth Veda in the Hindu tradition. For a long time, people only recognized three Vedas. The acceptance of the Atharvaveda was a slow process. Many traditions only saw three Vedas for many years. It was likely accepted as the fourth Veda much later. This happened during the second half of the first millennium BCE. It serves as a storehouse for the procedures of everyday life.

The text is organized into twenty different books. It contains 730 hymns and about 6,000 mantras. Most of these hymns are written in verse. About one sixth of the text is written in prose. The books are not grouped by subject or author. Instead, they are arranged by the length of the hymns. The shortest hymns are placed in Book 1. The books follow an increasing order of length. Some parts of the text even use verses from the Rigveda.

History tells us this text is quite ancient. It was likely compiled between 1200 BCE and 1000 BCE. Some scholars date it closer to 900 BCE. The text mentions iron, which people called "black metal." This mention helps scholars estimate its age. The name might come from a mythical priest named Atharvan. He was said to be the first to develop prayers to fire. He also composed formulas to fight diseases and calamities.

The content covers many different parts of life. The first seven books focus on healing and sorcery. Books 8 to 12 involve many different speculations. Books 13 to 18 focus on life cycle rituals. These include rites for marriage and for funerals. It also includes rituals for starting one's education. Some people call it a book of magic. However, many scholars say this is not quite correct. It is actually a collection of beliefs for daily life.

Two main versions of the text have survived. These are called the Shaunakiya and the Paippalada. The Paippalada version is considered more ancient. A well-preserved version was found in Odisha in 1957. This version was hidden among palm leaf manuscripts. The text also contains three important Upanishads. These include the Mundaka, Mandukya, and Prashna Upanishads. These texts explore deep ideas like monism. Monism is the belief in the oneness of all life.
