Brahman is a major idea in Hindu thought. It can have many different meanings.

In the oldest books, the Vedas, Brahman was linked to sound. It was the power found in words and rituals. Over time, the idea grew much larger. Many thinkers say Brahman is the ultimate reality. It is the source of everything in the universe. Some believe it creates and holds the world together. Then, it pulls everything back into itself.

Brahman is not a man or a woman. It is a neutral concept. Some people see Brahman as a divine being or a Lord. This being can appear as a god. Other people see it as a presence inside every person. This inner self is called Atman.

Different schools of thought view this in different ways. Some say Brahman and Atman are separate. Others believe they are exactly the same thing. They think a single spirit connects all life. In art, a swan can represent this deep link.
