The name means "Beneficial Advice." These tales use animals and people to teach lessons. They help readers learn how to act with wisdom. The author is likely a man named Narayana. He wrote the book to help people learn Sanskrit. He also wanted to teach people how to behave well.

The book is split into four parts. The first part is about how to gain a friend. The second part explains how to lose a friend. The third part looks at why wars happen. The last part shows how to find peace. Some stories are very short. Other stories are long and tell many tales within them.

Many people have studied this work. It is very similar to an older book called the Panchatantra. In fact, most of the Hitopadesha comes from that book. People have translated it into many languages. This includes English, French, and even Russian. It remains a very important part of Indian literature.
