Many people wonder if Aesop was a real person. No books written by him still exist today. Instead, his stories were passed down by word of mouth for many years. Some old books tell a story about his life. They say he was a slave who was very clever. He used his smart mind to gain his freedom. He even became an advisor to kings.

Other stories say he was very ugly. People sometimes laughed at how he looked or sounded. Some people also believe he was from Africa. They think this because some of his stories feature African animals like elephants. Even if we do not know everything about his life, his tales are still loved. People all over the world still read his fables today.
