Many people think he wrote all these tales. But many stories were added later. Some stories came from other lands too.

These stories are very special. They often feature talking animals or plants. Many tales end with a moral. A moral is a lesson about how to live. Some stories explain why things are the way they are. They might tell why a tortoise has a shell.

For a long time, people told these stories out loud. Later, people wrote them down in books. When printing became common, these fables were among the first books made.
