Ontology

Ontology is a special branch of philosophy. It is the study of being.

Socrates

This means it looks at what it means to exist. It asks what things all have in common. It also looks at how we group things into categories.

Some thinkers see it as a part of metaphysics. Metaphysics is the study of fundamental reality.

Ontology focuses on the most general features of that reality. It tries to find the building blocks of the world. It is different from biology or astronomy. Those sciences look at specific things like living things or stars. Ontology looks at everything at once.

Ontologists use many ways to study these big ideas. They look closely at concepts and experiences. They also use thought experiments and ideas from science.

There is a type called formal ontology. This looks at the most abstract features of objects. There is also applied ontology. This uses theories to study specific areas.

For example, social ontology looks at social sciences. Applied ontology is very helpful for computer science. It helps create frameworks to store information. A college database might use this to track activities. Ontology is also important to logic, theology, and anthropology.

One big idea is the difference between particulars and universals. Particulars are unique things that cannot be repeated.

Socrates is a particular. The Taj Mahal is a particular. Mars is also a particular. Universals are general things that can be repeated.

The color green is a universal. The shape of a circle is a universal. Courage is a universal. Universals describe features that particulars share. For example, Mount Everest is a particular. It has the universal quality of being a mountain.

You can also have properties and relations. Properties are qualities like being red. Relations are how things stand to each other. Being east of something is a relation.

Another way to group things is by how they exist. Concrete objects exist in space and time.

A tree or a car is a concrete object. They can affect other things. Abstract objects are different. They exist outside of space and time.

The number 7 is an abstract object. Numbers do not change or move. Some people also study fictional objects. These are things from stories.

The One Ring from a book is a fictional object. Some thinkers say these are also abstract objects. Others say they are created as people write stories.

People have wondered about being for a very long time. These questions started in ancient times.

Ancient Indian, Chinese, and Greek thinkers all speculated about the universe. They wondered about the source of everything. The word ontology comes from Greek words. "Ontos" means being. "Logia" means study of. So, it literally means the study of being.

Even though the ideas are ancient, the name is newer. Philosophers coined the name in the 17th century. Today, people still disagree on many ontological questions. They argue about whether only matter exists or if the mind is separate. These big questions keep the study alive.
