Ontology

philosophy religion Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Ontology is the philosophical study of being. It is a branch of philosophy that investigates the nature of existence. It seeks to understand the features all entities have in common. It also examines how these entities are divided into basic categories. This field aims to discover the foundational building blocks of the world. It tries to characterize reality in its most general aspects.

Unlike biology or astronomy, ontology does not focus on a limited domain. Biology studies living entities, and astronomy studies celestial phenomena. Ontology looks at the nature of everything that exists.

Many thinkers view ontology as a subdiscipline of metaphysics. Metaphysics is the study of various aspects of fundamental reality. In this view, ontology focuses on the most general features of that reality. Some see it as general metaphysics, distinct from special metaphysics. Special metaphysics might focus on specific subjects like God, mind, or value.

Other philosophers see ontology as a preliminary discipline. They believe it provides a complete inventory of reality. In this conception, metaphysics then examines the structure of those entities. There is no universal agreement on where the boundary lies. Some philosophers simply use both terms as synonyms.

Ontologists use several methods to investigate these deep questions. They perform analyses of concepts and human experience. They also use intuitions and thought experiments to test ideas. They may even integrate findings from the natural sciences.

There are two main branches: formal and applied ontology. Formal ontology investigates the most abstract features of objects. Applied ontology uses these principles to study specific domains. For example, social ontology examines concepts used in social sciences.

In computer science, applied ontology helps create frameworks for information. A college database might use these frameworks to track academic activities.

A central distinction in ontology is between particulars and universals. Particulars, or individuals, are unique and non-repeatable entities.

Examples include the person Socrates, the Taj Mahal, or the planet Mars. Universals are general and repeatable entities.

The color green, the shape of a circle, or the virtue of courage are universals. Universals express features shared by many particulars. For instance, Mount Everest and Mount Fuji are particulars that share the universal of being a mountain.

Universals can take the form of properties or relations.

Properties describe the specific characteristics or qualities of an entity. Philosophers divide these into essential and accidental properties. An essential property is something an entity must have to exist. For example, having three sides is essential for a triangle. An accidental property is something an entity can lose without changing its nature. Being red is an accidental property of a triangle.

Relations describe how two or more entities stand to one another. Being "east of" is a spatial relation between two locations. Substances are also important as they support properties and relations. Substances are often seen as the fundamental building blocks of reality. They can exist on their own and persist through change.

Ontologists also distinguish between concrete and abstract objects. Concrete objects exist within space and time.

A tree, a car, or a planet are concrete objects. They possess causal powers and can affect other things. Abstract objects exist outside of space and time.

The number 7 or a set of integers are abstract objects. They do not undergo changes and lack causal powers. Some thinkers also study fictional objects, like the One Ring from literature.

Others study intentional objects, which exist within mental states like beliefs or desires.

The origins of ontology reach back to ancient times. Speculations about the nature of being began in ancient India, China, and Greece.

These early thinkers wondered about the source of the universe. The word itself comes from two Greek terms. "Ontos" means being, and "logia" means study of. While the ideas are ancient, the term was coined in the 17th century. Today, many debates continue regarding the nature of reality. Some argue for materialism, where only matter exists. Others argue for dualism, where mind and matter are independent.

These questions remain central to how we understand our world.
