Existence

What does it mean to be real? This is the big question of existence. Existence is the state of having being or reality. It is the opposite of nonexistence.

Philosophers study these ideas in a field called ontology. Ontology looks at the nature and types of existence. Some people think existence is a simple thing. They say an entity either exists or it does not. Other thinkers believe there are different degrees of existence. They suggest some things might exist more than others.

There are many ways to group things that exist. One way is to look at concrete and abstract objects. Concrete objects are things like rocks, plants, or people. These things live in space and time. They can also affect other things. Abstract objects are different, like numbers or sets. They do not have a location in space.

Another way is to look at singular and general existence. Singular existence is about one specific person or thing. General existence is about a whole group or idea. For example, one person exists, but the idea of a politician also exists. Philosophers like Gottlob Frege thought general existence was more basic.

History shows that people have wondered about this for a long time. Ancient thinkers in Greece, India, and China all discussed these ideas.

In the late 14th century, the word "existence" entered the English language. It came from old French and Latin roots. The Latin roots mean to stand forth or to arise. Many famous thinkers have shared their views over the years. Alexius Meinong lived from 1853 to 1920. He had a very interesting idea about things that do not exist.

Different thinkers have very different rules for what counts as real. Alexius Meinong said that some things have "being" but no existence. He used Santa Claus as an example of something that has being. George Berkeley, who lived from 1685 to 1753, had a different view. He said that to be is to be perceived. This means he thought all existence was mental.

Other thinkers like Edmund Husserl, from 1859 to 1938, found the concept very hard to define. He thought existence was an elementary concept. This means it might be impossible to explain it without using the word itself.

Existence is also linked to the idea of essence. Essence is the set of qualities that make a thing what it is. For example, you can know the essence of a dragon. You know what it looks like and how it acts. Even so, a dragon does not have existence.

There are also ideas about necessary and contingent existence. A telephone has contingent existence because it could fail to exist. It was not always here. Some thinkers, like Thomas Aquinas from 1225 to 1274, believed God has necessary existence. This means such a being could not fail to exist. These deep questions help us understand our world and our minds.
