Many people find his life interesting because he helped keep a huge empire together. We learn about him through many different old stories. Some stories come from Buddhist writers and some from Jain writers. These stories were written hundreds of years after he lived. Because of this, historians have to be careful with the facts. They use these legends to try and understand his reign.

There are many different stories about how Bindusara got his name. One legend says he was born after a very difficult event. It says a minister named Chanakya saved the baby to keep him alive. In this story, the baby's body had spots from drops of blood. This led to the name Bindusara, which can mean "drops."

Another story says his name means "the strength of the drop." Different old books even give him different names. Some call him Amitraghata, which means "slayer of enemies." Greek writers also had their own names for him, like Amitrochates. These names show how people from different places saw him.

As an emperor, Bindusara had a big job to do. He had to manage the lands his father had won. Historians have different ideas about how much land he ruled. Some believe he conquered new areas in southern India. Others think he mostly kept the empire exactly as it was. One idea is that he kept the empire strong and organized. He may have controlled southern groups like the Cheras and the Cholas. Even if he did not win new battles, he kept the peace. This helped the Mauryan Empire stay a strong land for a long time.

Bindusara also had a very large family. Some Buddhist texts say he had 101 sons from 16 different women. His eldest son was named Sushima. His most famous son was Ashoka. Ashoka's mother was a woman named Subhadrangi. She was the daughter of a Brahmin from the city of Champa. Some stories say she worked as a barber before becoming a queen. Bindusara also sent his sons to help rule different parts of the empire. For example, Ashoka was sent to rule a place called Ujjayini. This helped the emperor manage such a huge amount of territory.

Even though he lived a long time ago, Bindusara was connected to the wider world. He was friendly with the Greeks. He kept up diplomatic relations with Greek leaders. One famous story says he sent a request to a Greek king named Antiochus I. Bindusara asked for sweet wine and dried figs. He even asked for a sophist, which is a teacher of philosophy. He wanted to learn about Greek ways of thinking. This shows that he was a curious leader who valued knowledge. His life connects the history of India to the history of the ancient Greek world.
