He was born on April 16, 1516, at Toungoo Palace. People sometimes called him "Black Tongue." This was because he had black spots on his tongue when he was born. His father was King Mingyi Nyo. His mother was a commoner named Khin Oo. His father gave him a grand name. It means "Unitary Golden Umbrella." This name used a special symbol for Burmese kings.

As a young prince, he learned many skills. He studied military strategy and martial arts. He also learned to ride horses and elephants. He grew up with many servants. One of them was a boy named Ye Htut. Ye Htut became the king's most important helper. People believed a prophecy about the young prince. They thought he would be a great warrior. Some legends say swords in the armory shone at his birth. This was seen as a good sign for a leader.

Tabinshwehti became king in 1530. He was only 14 years old then. He made big choices early in his rule. He wanted to protect his small land from neighbors. In 1534, he decided to attack the Hanthawaddy kingdom. He wanted to grow his small area into a large empire. He worked closely with his deputy, Bayinnaung. They used clever tricks to win battles.

However, he could not win everywhere. He tried to take land in Arakan and Siam. Those attempts did not succeed. He also worked hard to include Mon people in his government.

Tabinshwehti's life ended very suddenly. He was assassinated on his 34th birthday in 1550. An adviser named Smim Sawhtut was responsible. The large kingdom he built fell apart quickly after he died. His brother-in-law, Bayinnaung, had to fix it. Bayinnaung worked for two years to restore the land. Today, Tabinshwehti is still remembered as a great king. He is even honored as a spirit in Myanmar.
