He was born as Aung Zeya in 1714. His family had been leaders in that area for a long time. He grew up to be a tall and strong man. People saw that he was a natural leader.

Life was very difficult for people in Upper Burma back then. The central government in the city of Ava was getting weak. Raiders from a place called Manipur often attacked villages. They burned homes and took people away.

Aung Zeya took over as chief of his village in his twenties. He helped his neighbors defend themselves against these raids. In 1736, a commander gave him an official title. He became a deputy leader in the Mu Valley. He helped collect taxes and keep order.

In 1752, things changed very quickly for the whole country. A group called the Hanthawaddy Kingdom attacked the city of Ava. Many people were afraid, but Aung Zeya chose to fight back. He convinced 46 villages to join his resistance. On February 29, 1752, he proclaimed himself king. He took the royal name Alaungpaya.

He renamed his village Shwebo to make it a strong base. He even built a moat around it for protection. He believed that having brave friends was more important than having many weapons.

Alaungpaya spent many years bringing different lands together. He first fought to retake the city of Ava in 1754. Then, he led a large army into Lower Burma.
