Tambralinga

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Tambralinga was a significant kingdom located on the Malay Peninsula. Most of its land is in what we now call Southern Thailand. This kingdom existed for a very long time, from at least the 2nd century to the 13th century. The name Tambralinga comes from Sanskrit and Prakrit words. The word "tambra" means copper or red. The word "linga" means a symbol or a creation. Together, the name often represented the divine energy of the god Shiva.

The kingdom was built around five main areas called mandalas. These areas were located along several rivers and waterways. One large mandala was on the Haad Sai Keao dune. This dune was likely the center of the kingdom. People connected these different areas using land paths and water.

At first, many people followed a belief system called Vaishnavism. The kings were often seen as "Siva-kings." This means they were linked to the god Shiva. Later, many monks and people arrived from Sri Lanka. They brought Buddhism, which eventually became the main belief system.

History shows that Tambralinga was often part of a changing world. For a long time, it was near the gateway between two oceans. This made it a busy place for trade and travel. In the early years, it may have been under the influence of Srivijaya. Some scholars believe it was also connected to the Khmer Empire. In the year 1001, Tambralinga sent its first embassy to China. This was during the Song dynasty.

These missions to China happened again in 1016 and 1070. These events show how important the kingdom was in the region.

The kingdom reached a golden age in the middle of the 13th century. A powerful leader named King Chandrabhanu ruled during this time. He belonged to a group called the Padmavamsa clan. Under his rule, Tambralinga was independent and very strong. He even led an invasion of the island of Sri Lanka in 1244. He took the name "Sri Dharmaraja" when he ruled there.

This was a time of great power and regrouping for the kingdom.

Eventually, the kingdom began to face many hard jobs. After King Chandrabhanu died in battle, his brother became the new leader. The kingdom faced an invasion from a king named Kertanagara in 1268. A big sickness, or plague, also hit the land in 1270. These events caused the kingdom to decline. By the end of the 13th century, the area was part of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Today, we recognize the site of Tambralinga as Nakhon Si Thammarat. It remains a place with a very deep and interesting history.
