Tambralinga

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Tambralinga was a powerful Indianised kingdom located on the Malay Peninsula. Most of its territory is found in modern-day Southern Thailand. This political entity existed from at least the 2nd century until the 13th century CE. The name Tambralinga comes from Sanskrit and Prakrit languages. The word "tambra" means copper, copper-coloured, or red. The word "linga" means symbol or creation. In a religious context, this name represented the divine energy of the god Shiva.

The kingdom functioned through a system of five main mandalas. A mandala is a political unit formed by several surrounding communities. These communities were organized around the shrine of a sacred site. Each mandala served as a central hub for its people. The mandalas were connected to one another through land paths and waterways. One of the largest mandalas was located on the Haad Sai Keao dune. This area is speculated to have been the center of the kingdom.

Religious beliefs in Tambralinga changed significantly over the centuries. During the early period, Vaishnavism was the predominant belief system. The kings were often institutionalized as "Siva-kings" to extend their power. However, the religious landscape shifted after the year 1026. Following a war with the Chola Empire, a noble clan called the Padmavamsa rose to power. This period saw an influx of monks and people from Sri Lanka. As a result, Buddhism became the dominant religion in the kingdom.

Tambralinga's history is marked by its role as a gateway between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. This location made it a vital site for social and economic interaction. In the 10th and 11th centuries, the kingdom gained independence from Srivijaya. This was achieved through the liberation led by King Sujita. During this era, Tambralinga was a strong political force. It even sent several diplomatic missions to the Chinese Song dynasty. These embassies occurred in the years 1001, 1016, and 1070.

The kingdom reached its peak during the mid-13th century. This was a golden age of independence and military strength. King Chandrabhanu, a member of the Padmavamsa lineage, was a key leader. He worked to regroup and consolidate the power of the state. In 1244, Chandrabhanu invaded Sri Lanka. He even installed himself as the king of Jaffna. During this time, he adopted the regnal name "Śrī Dharmarāja."

Despite its strength, the kingdom eventually faced a period of decline. The wars with Sri Lanka between 1247 and 1270 were very difficult. After King Chandrabhanu died in battle, his brother became the successor. The kingdom then faced new external threats. In 1268, the king of Singhasari, Kertanagara, launched an invasion. Additionally, a plague struck the region in 1270. These combined factors led to the weakening of the Tambralinga state.

By the end of the 13th century, the political identity of the region changed once more. Tambralinga was recorded in Siamese history as Nakhon Si Thammarat. It fell under the suzerainty of the Tai Sukhothai Kingdom. This means it became a dependency of the Sukhothai rulers. Today, scholars use various inscriptions to reconstruct this history. One important Sanskrit inscription from 1230 helps identify the kingdom's location. These ancient records allow us to understand how Tambralinga shaped the history of the peninsula.
