People believe it existed from the 2nd century to the 15th century. It was one of the first kingdoms in that area. Some stories say it was started by followers of a king named Ashoka the Great. This king was a famous leader from India. He became a peaceful person who followed Buddhism. Some think the name Langkasuka honors his name. This kingdom was a major part of early history in Southeast Asia.

The kingdom was a busy place for trade and travel.

Merchants traveled there to buy many different things. They traded items like elephant tusks and rhinoceros horns. They also sold special woods and camphor. People used silk, rice, and porcelain to trade as well. The kingdom produced its own salt from seawater. They even made wine from rice. These goods helped the kingdom connect with many other lands.

Langkasuka had a very grand capital city.

Chinese records describe the city as having large walls. It had double gates, towers, and beautiful pavilions. The city sat near rivers that led to the sea. These rivers were connected by canals. People used these waterways to move goods easily. However, the waterways eventually filled with sand and silt. This change might have caused the city to decline.

Many different leaders ruled the kingdom over the years.

One famous king was named Bhagadatta. He sent the first official messengers to the Chinese court in 515 AD. Other messengers were sent in 523, 531, and 568. A legend tells of a leader named Merong Mahawangsa who founded the land. There was also a ruler called the Fanged King. His behavior was so bad that his ministers revolted against him. The kingdom changed many times as new empires rose.

We know about Langkasuka because of many clues.

Archaeologists have found ruins near a village called Yarang in Thailand. They found Buddhist statues and Hindu objects there. They also found bronze and silver coins from far away. These coins show that people from many places visited. This helps us understand how the kingdom lived. Today, the area became part of places like Pattani. The story of Langkasuka helps us learn about the ancient world.
