Many people look to him as a symbol of national unity.
Sukarno's journey to leadership involved many different steps. First, he studied to become a civil engineer in Bandung.

His life changed many times due to his political work. In 1929, the Dutch colonial authorities arrested him.
As president, Sukarno did many big things for his country. He fought to keep Indonesia free from Dutch re-colonization. He used both talking and military strength to do this. By 1959, he introduced a system called Guided Democracy. He did this to try and bring stability to the land. He also helped lead the Non-Aligned Movement for many nations. He even had a plan for a new United Nations in Jakarta.
Later years brought very difficult changes to Indonesia. In 1965, a coup attempt happened involving the Communist Party.

Sukarno was a central figure in the history of modern Indonesia. He was a statesman, an activist, and a revolutionary leader. From 1945 to 1967, he served as the first president of Indonesia.

Sukarno's early life was shaped by his diverse background and education. He was born in 1901 in Surabaya, East Java. His father was a Javanese teacher, and his mother was a Hindu from Bali. This mixed heritage was reflected in his ability to master many languages. He spoke Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Indonesian, and Dutch fluently. He also studied German, English, French, Arabic, and Japanese.
His political journey began with a focus on social and economic justice. While studying, he developed an ideology called Marhaenism. This was named after Marhaen, a local peasant he had met. Marhaenism focused on the needs of small farmers and workers.
Because of his activism, Sukarno faced significant hardship under Dutch rule. The colonial government viewed his nationalist speeches as a threat. In December 1929, authorities arrested him during a raid in Yogyakarta. He was tried in Bandung in 1930. During the trial, he delivered a famous speech titled "Indonesia Accuses."
World War II brought a major shift in Sukarno's political position. When Japanese forces invaded, they released Sukarno from his detention. He and other nationalists collaborated with the Japanese. They helped the Japanese war effort in exchange for support for nationalist ideas.
As president, Sukarno's leadership style and foreign policy evolved. In 1959, he replaced parliamentary democracy with a system called "Guided Democracy." He believed this was necessary to restore stability and stop regional rebellions.
Political instability eventually led to a violent transition of power. In 1965, a coup attempt occurred, allegedly organized by leaders in the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). This event triggered a massive military takeover led by General Suharto.

Sukarno's legacy remains a powerful force in Indonesian society. During the early years of the Suharto regime, his achievements were often minimized. However, as the New Order fell in 1998, interest in his life returned. He is remembered as a founding father who fought for the dignity of his people. His name is still used today in major landmarks, such as the Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. Many Indonesians continue to view him as a vital symbol of the nation's independence and unity.
