He served as the fourth president of Indonesia from 1999 until 2001. Many people knew him by his nickname, Gus Dur. This name comes from "Gus," an honorific for the son of a kyai, and "Dur," a short form of his name. He was also the founder of the National Awakening Party, known as the PKB.

Before his presidency, a 1967 rule by the New Order government restricted Chinese New Year celebrations. These celebrations could only happen inside specific Chinese community centers. On January 17, 2000, Wahid issued Presidential Decree No. 6 to cancel that restriction. He also established Confucianism as the sixth official religion in Indonesia in 2000. These actions allowed many different cultures to be recognized and celebrated openly.

Wahid was born into a highly influential family in Jombang.

His birth date is recorded as September 7, 1940, according to the Islamic calendar. He was the son of Wahid Hasyim, a former Minister of Religious Affairs. His grandfather, Hasyim Asy'ari, was the founder of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) organization. Wahid had a diverse heritage, including Chinese, Arab, and Javanese ancestry. He was the eldest of five children in a prestigious Muslim community.

His education took him across several different countries and cultures.

In 1963, he moved to Egypt to study at Al Azhar University. After facing challenges with Arabic language requirements, he eventually studied at the Higher Institute for Islamic and Arabic Studies. He later moved to Iraq to attend the University of Baghdad, graduating in 1970. Before returning to Indonesia in 1971, he traveled through the Netherlands, Germany, and France. This international experience helped shape his views as a global citizen.

Before becoming president, Wahid worked in many different roles. He was a journalist for magazines like Horizon and the newspaper Kompas. He also worked as a teacher and a dean at Hasyim Asy'ari University. During his early career, he traveled to various pesantren, which are traditional Muslim schools. He noticed that many of these schools were struggling with poverty. He also worried that state-mandated curricula might damage traditional values. These observations led him to focus on the development of the pesantren system.

Wahid eventually took on a massive leadership role within the Nahdlatul Ulama.

Although he initially preferred being a public intellectual, he joined the NU Religious Advisory Council. He wanted to modernize the organization, which some people thought had become stagnant. He was part of a "Team of Seven" created to revitalize the group. He also gained political experience by campaigning for the United Development Party in 1982. This period helped prepare him for his eventual rise to the presidency.

Wahid also navigated personal physical challenges throughout his life. He suffered from glaucoma, a condition that affects the eyes. This condition left him blind in his left eye and partially blind in his right eye. He holds the distinction of being the first president of Indonesia to have a physical disability. Despite these visual impairments, he remained a highly active and influential figure in global politics. His life connects the traditions of Islamic scholarship with modern democratic leadership.
