Mohammad Khatami is a prominent Iranian politician and Shia cleric. He served as the fifth president of Iran from August 3, 1997, to August 3, 2005.

Khatami is widely recognized as Iran's first reformist president. He rose to power by advocating for liberalization and political reform. His presidency represented a significant attempt to change how the Iranian government interacted with its citizens and the world. His leadership focused on the rule of law and increasing democratic participation in the country.

Khatami's political journey began with several specialized roles in the Iranian government. He served as a member of parliament from 1980 to 1982. Later, he held the position of Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance for two terms.

He also led the National Library of Iran from 1992 to 1997. These roles provided him with deep experience in both cultural and political administration. His background as a cleric and a scholar helped shape his specific approach to governance.

In 1997, Khatami won the presidency in a remarkable election. Even though he had limited television airtime, he received nearly 70 percent of the vote.

This victory was significant because it occurred in conservative strongholds like the city of Qom. His supporters were a diverse group often called a "coalition of strange bedfellows." This group included traditional leftists, business leaders, and many young voters. This movement is often referred to as the "2nd of Khordad Movement."

One of Khatami's most important ideas was the Dialogue Among Civilizations. He proposed this as a response to the "Clash of Civilizations" theory.

He wanted different cultures to engage in constructive diplomatic relations. This idea was so influential that the United Nations declared 2001 as the Year of Dialogue Among Civilizations. He traveled extensively to Europe and other regions to share this vision. He visited countries such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain to build international connections.

Khatami's presidency was marked by a struggle for political power. He advocated for freedom of expression, civil society, and women's rights. However, he faced constant opposition from hardline and conservative groups.

These groups controlled powerful institutions like the Guardian Council. Khatami tried to pass the "twin bills" to define presidential power and change election laws. While the parliament approved these bills, the Guardian Council ultimately vetoed them. This showed the limits of his authority compared to the Supreme Leader.

On the economic front, Khatami focused on privatization and industrialization. He wanted to move toward a free market and encourage foreign investment.

His government implemented a five-year plan between 2000 and 2004. This plan aimed for economic reconstruction and social development. During his term, real GDP growth rose from 2.4 percent in 1997 to 5.9 percent in 2000. He also helped reduce the country's external debt from $12.1 billion to $7.9 billion. Despite these successes, unemployment remained a difficult problem for his administration.

Khatami's influence continued even after he left the presidency in 2005. In 2009, he considered running for president again. Instead, he chose to support his friend and adviser, Mir-Hossein Mousavi.

Because of his support for reformist candidates, the Iranian media was eventually forbidden from publishing his pictures or quotes. His life remains a study of the tension between reform and established power in Iran. His efforts to connect Iran to the global community left a lasting mark on the nation's history.
