He served as the second supreme leader of Iran from 1989 until 2026. Before this, he was the third president of Iran from 1981 to 1989. As a Shia cleric, he held the title of Ayatollah. His long tenure as supreme leader lasted 36 years and six months. This made him the longest-serving head of state in West Asia at the time of his death.

Khamenei was born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad. He grew up in a religious household with many siblings. His father, Javad Khamenei, was a religious teacher.

Khamenei studied at a religious school called a hawza. In 1958, he moved to Qom to study under Ruhollah Khomeini. During his youth, he became active in opposing the regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. This political activity led to him being arrested six times. He was also exiled from his country for three years.

After the Iranian Revolution succeeded, Khamenei held several government positions. He served as a deputy defense minister and a supervisor of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards.

In 1981, he was elected president of Iran with 97% of the vote. During this time, he faced an assassination attempt at the Aboozar Mosque. A bomb hidden in a tape recorder exploded near him. This event caused serious injuries to his lungs and vocal cords. It also left him with a permanent disability in his right arm.

Following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, a new leadership process began. The Assembly of Experts met to choose a new supreme leader. Khamenei initially had doubts about his own religious qualifications. At the time, the constitution required the leader to be a marja'. A marja' is a high-ranking religious authority. To allow his leadership, the Assembly of Experts amended the constitution to remove this requirement. This change allowed Khamenei to be confirmed as the supreme leader later that year.

Khamenei's leadership focused on making Iran a powerful energy state. He supported economic privatization for state-owned industries. Because of Iran's large oil and gas reserves, he helped the nation become an "energy superpower." He also focused heavily on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC. He transformed the IRGC into a primary tool for regional influence and domestic control. His foreign policy was centered on Shia Islamism and spreading the ideals of the Islamic Revolution.

Under his rule, Iran became involved in many regional conflicts. He supported the "Axis of Resistance" coalition in several wars. These included the Syrian civil war, the war in Iraq, the Yemeni civil war, and the Gaza war. He also provided support to Russia during the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Khamenei was a very strong critic of Israel and Zionism. He used harsh rhetoric regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His leadership was also marked by proxy wars involving Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Khamenei was often described as a pragmatic hardliner. He frequently sidelined moderate clerics and political dissidents to keep power consolidated. This concentration of power led to significant criticism from many people. Critics called him an authoritarian leader. They accused his government of political repression and state-sanctioned violence. Journalists and activists faced persecution for various actions. Some were even charged with blasphemy for insulting the supreme leader.

His era was marked by many large public protests. These occurred in 1999, 2009, 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2025. Tensions with the United States and Israel grew very high in the mid-2020s. This led to the Twelve-Day War and an ongoing conflict. During this period of war, Khamenei was assassinated in 2026.

Following his death, the Assembly of Experts elected his son, Mojtaba, as his successor on March 8.
