Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a leader in Nigeria.

Ojukwu joined the Nigerian army. He worked his way up to become a major. In 1966, a group of soldiers took control of the government. This was called a coup. Ojukwu was named the leader of the Eastern Region.

Things became very difficult for the Igbo people. They faced danger in other parts of the country. To protect them, Ojukwu made a new country called Biafra. This led to the Nigerian Civil War. The war was very hard. Many people did not have enough food. This caused a mass famine, which is when many people go hungry. Millions of people died during this war.

Biafra lost the war in 1970. Ojukwu had to leave Nigeria for a time. He lived in Ivory Coast. Later, he was allowed to come home. He died in 2011. Some people see him as a hero. Others disagree with his choices.
