Geometer moth

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Geometer moths are a very large group of insects. They belong to the family Geometridae. This family includes around 23,000 different species. In North America alone, there are over 1,400 species. One famous member is the peppered moth, known as Biston betularia. Scientists study this moth to learn about how populations change. Some other moths in this group are known to be pests.

The name Geometridae comes from Greek words. It means "earth-measurer." This name describes how their larvae, or caterpillars, move. Most caterpillars have five pairs of legs on their bellies. Geometer caterpillars only have two or three pairs at the back. To move, they grab with their front legs. They pull their back end up toward their front. Then they reach out with their back legs. This creates a looping motion. People call them inchworms, loopers, or spanworms.

Inchworms have many ways to stay safe from predators. They are often green, grey, or brown. This helps them hide by blending into their surroundings. Some look like twigs or even cover themselves in plant bits. If they are disturbed, they may stand straight and still. This makes them look even more like a twig. Some species eat lichen, flowers, or pollen. However, some Hawaiian species in the genus Eupithecia are actually carnivorous.

Scientists have found clues about these moths from long ago. In 2019, German scientists found a fossil in Baltic amber. This was a geometrid caterpillar named Eogeometer vadens. It was about 2 millimeters long. Experts think it is about 44 million years old. This specimen comes from the Eocene epoch. It is the earliest evidence for the subfamily Ennominae.

Adult geometer moths often look like butterflies. They have slender bodies and broad wings. Most of these moths fly at night. Their wings often have wavy patterns to help them hide. They use a part called a frenulum to link their wings. Males often have antennae that look feathered. Most moths have a wingspan of about 20 millimeters. However, some species like Dysphania can grow much larger.
