Owlet moths are a huge family of insects called Noctuidae.

They are also known as noctuid moths. Many people know their babies as cutworms or armyworms. These names come from how the caterpillars act. Some caterpillars move in big swarms. Others can cut through the stems of plants. This family is very large and diverse. It contains about 1,089 genera and 11,772 different species. Scientists are still studying them to learn more.

Most adult moths in this group have wings with many shades. You might see brown or grey colors on them. These colors help them hide from predators. Some moths, like those in the Agaristinae subfamily, are very bright.

Many moths have special markings on their wings. You might see a club-shaped mark or a kidney-shaped mark. These shapes help experts tell one species from another. Some moths also have lines that run across their wings. These patterns are like a unique fingerprint for each moth.

Scientists have studied these moths for a long time. The name Noctuidae comes from the genus Noctua. This is the Latin word for a little owl. That is why people call them owlet moths. The family was first named by Latreille in 1809.

Finding where each moth belongs is a hard job. This is because new research changes how we group them. For a long time, they were the largest family of moths. Now, they are the second largest family in the Noctuoidea group. This is because some other moths moved to a different family called Erebidae.

These moths live almost everywhere on Earth. You can find them in every place except the Antarctic. Some live in very cold spots like the Arctic Circle.

One moth lives in the Yukon territory of Canada. It lives high up where temperatures can drop very low. Other moths live at very high elevations. Some have been found 4,000 meters above sea level. In North America and Mexico, there are about 2,522 species. Europe is also home to about 1,576 different species.

Noctuid moths play a big part in nature. Adult moths visit flowers to drink nectar. While they do this, they help pollinate the plants.

This helps more plants grow. Some moths even have a special bond with certain plants. The adults pollinate the flowers while the babies eat the seeds. However, some caterpillars can be a problem for farmers. They can eat many crops like maize or corn. Some species cause more than 2 billion dollars in damage every year.
