Vespertilionidae is a huge family of small bats. These flying mammals are often called evening bats. This name comes from the Latin word for evening. They are the most diverse group of bats in the world. You can find them on almost every continent. The only place they do not live is Antarctica.

Most of these bats use a special way to see called echolocation. They make high sounds with their mouths. These sounds are called ultrasound. The sound waves bounce off things in the dark. Many species have large ears to catch these sounds. This helps them find food and navigate. Most of these bats eat insects. Some special types even catch fish or small birds.

Scientists have studied these bats for a long time. We know they split from other bat groups a long time ago. This happened during the early Eocene period. Some researchers think they first lived in a place called Laurasia. This might have been in North America. One type of bat, called Synemporion keana, lived in Hawaii. That species is now extinct.

These bats come in many different shapes and sizes. Most are brown or grey, which is why people call them little brown bats. However, some have bright fur in red, orange, or yellow. Their wings help them fly in different ways. Some have broad wings to fly slowly. Others have long wings to chase insects quickly. Their tails are tucked inside a skin membrane between their legs.

Finding a place to sleep is very important for them. Many bats live in dark caves. Others find homes in hollow trees or rocky cracks. Some even live in animal burrows. These bats can live alone or in huge groups. Some colonies can have up to one million bats! In cold places, they hibernate to stay safe. In hot places, they might use aestivation to survive the heat.
