Vespertilionidae is a large family of bats. They are often called evening bats. This name comes from a Latin word for evening.

These bats live on almost every continent. They are found everywhere except Antarctica. Most of them eat insects. However, some species catch fish. Others can even catch small birds while flying.

These bats use echolocation to find food. Echolocation is a way to use sound to see. They make sounds with their mouths. Large ears help them hear the sound bounce back. This helps them know where things are.

Their bodies look different depending on how they fly. Some have broad wings for slow flight. Others have long wings to chase bugs fast. Their tails are tucked inside a skin membrane between their legs.

Most of these bats are brown or grey. Some have bright fur in red or yellow. They sleep in many places. Some live in caves. Others use hollow trees or rocky cracks. Some sleep alone. Other groups can have a million bats!
