life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Vampire bats live in Central and South America. They are special because they feed only on blood. This way of eating is called hematophagy. There are three living species of these bats.

One is the common vampire bat. It mostly eats the blood of mammals. The other two species eat the blood of birds.

These bats have very sharp teeth. Their front teeth are made for cutting. They do not have enamel on them. This keeps the teeth very sharp.

When they find a sleeping animal, they lick the skin. This makes the skin soft. Then they make a small cut. Their saliva helps the blood keep flowing.

Common vampire bats can also sense heat. They have special parts on their noses. These parts find warm spots on an animal. This helps them find where blood is close to the skin.

Vampire bats are very social. They live in large groups in dark places. They even share food with each other. If one bat does not eat, a friend will give it blood. This helps the whole group stay healthy.
