They are different from megabats. Most microbats use echolocation to find their way. Echolocation is a way to see using sound. The bat makes a sound with its larynx. The larynx is in the throat. This sound is an ultrasonic wave. Humans cannot hear these sounds. The sound hits an object and bounces back. The bat listens to the echo. This helps the bat find food and fly safely.

Microbats eat many different things. Most eat insects. Some eat fruit or nectar. A few eat birds, lizards, or fish. Only three species are vampire bats. They eat the blood of large animals.

Because they eat different foods, their teeth look different. Their teeth have a W-shaped pattern. This is called dilambdodont teeth. This shape helps them break down food. Microbats also have large ears. They have a part called a tragus in their ears. This part helps them use their sound to see.
