Hummingbirds are small birds found in the Americas.

They live from Alaska to the tip of South America. Most species live in warm, tropical places. There are about 375 different kinds of hummingbirds.

These birds have very special ways of flying. Their wings flap at high speeds. This makes a humming sound that people can hear. Small birds flap their wings 99 times every second. Large birds flap much slower, about 12 times per second.

They can even fly backward or hover in one spot.

To power this fast flight, they need lots of food. They use long beaks to drink nectar from flowers. They also eat small insects.

Sometimes, they need to save power. They can enter torpor, which is a state like sleep. This slows their body down when food is hard to find.

Many male hummingbirds have bright, shiny feathers. These colors can be blue, green, or purple. Some males have a patch on their neck called a gorget. This colorful patch helps them find mates.

Sadly, many hummingbird numbers are going down. Habitat loss and other things make it hard for them to grow.
