Hummingbirds are tiny, amazing birds found in the Americas.

They live in many places from Alaska down to Tierra del Fuego. Most of the 375 different species live in warm, tropical areas. These birds are special because they can fly in any direction. They can even hover in one spot like a helicopter.

This unique way of flying makes them very hard to catch.

To fly this way, hummingbirds must move their wings very fast. Small birds like the little woodstar flap their wings 99 times every second.

This fast movement creates a humming sound that humans can hear. This sound is how they got their name. Large species flap their wings much slower, at about 12 beats per second.

Such fast flight requires a huge amount of energy. They get this energy by drinking sugary nectar from flowers. They also eat small insects to stay strong.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. The family name for hummingbirds is Trochilidae.

An Irish scientist named Nicholas Aylward Vigors named this family in 1825. We also have very old clues about their history. A fossil called Eurotrochilus was found in Germany.

This fossil is about 30 million years old. It shows that hummingbirds have been around for a very long time.

There are many different sizes of hummingbirds. The bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world.

It weighs less than a single gram. On the other side, the giant hummingbird is much larger. It weighs about 20 grams and has a big wingspan.

Many males have bright, shiny feathers in blue or green. They often have a patch on their neck called a gorget. This colorful patch helps them attract mates or warn other birds away.

Some hummingbirds do things that might surprise you. The rufous hummingbird travels a very long way each year.

It flies between Alaska and Mexico twice every year. This trip is about 4,000 miles long. When food is hard to find, they can enter torpor. Torpor is a state like hibernation that slows their body down.

This helps them save energy so they can survive the night.
