These birds have a very sleek body shape. They also have long, pointed wings. This shape helps them fly with great skill. They use their flight to hunt for food. Most swallows eat flying insects. They catch these bugs while they are in the air.

Swallows have wide mouths to help them catch prey. They also have eyes that help them see well. This helps them track moving insects. Some swallows live in many different places. They can live near lakes or in open fields. They can even live in cities.

Many species travel very long distances. They move to new lands when the seasons change. This is called migration. Other swallows stay in the same place all year. Some swallows build nests out of mud. Others find holes in trees or cliffs to live in.
