People have been studying these birds for a long time. A scientist named Constantine Samuel Rafinesque named the family in 1815. 
Swallows come in many different sizes and colors. 

These birds live in many different kinds of places. They can be found in grasslands, marshes, and even cities. Some species travel huge distances when they migrate. They move to find food when the seasons change. Other swallows, like those in West Africa, stay in one place. They might build nests out of mud or find holes in trees. Some swallows even live in large groups called colonies. In Nigeria, one winter group had 1.5 million barn swallows!
The Hirundinidae are a diverse family of passerine songbirds known commonly as swallows, martins, and saw-wings. 

To hunt effectively, swallows have developed a very specific physical mechanism for flight and feeding. They possess slender, streamlined bodies and long, pointed wings that allow for great maneuverability and endurance. This shape allows them to glide frequently and fly with extreme efficiency. In fact, the metabolic rate of a swallow in flight is 49% to 72% lower than other passerines of a similar size. To track moving prey, they have long eyes that provide high visual acuity. They also have a short bill with a wide gape, which is a large mouth opening. This allows them to scoop up flying insects while moving rapidly through the air.
Taxonomically, the family is divided into two distinct subfamilies. The first is Pseudochelidoninae, which contains only two species known as the river martins. The second is Hirundininae, which includes all other swallows, martins, and saw-wings. Within the Hirundininae, scientists recognize three core groups: the saw-wings of the genus Psalidoprocne, the core martins, and the swallows of the genus Hirundo. These groups are linked to different nesting strategies. The basal saw-wings use burrows for nests. Core martins use both burrows and existing cavities. The genus Hirundo and its relatives use mud to construct their nests. 
History shows that our understanding of these birds has changed significantly over time. The family Hirundinidae was introduced by the French polymath Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1815. For centuries, people were confused about how swallows survived the winter. Ancient thinkers like Aristotle believed swallows hibernated. Even in 1789, the observer Rev. Gilbert White suggested hibernation might occur. By 1878, Dr. Elliott Coues had compiled 182 different papers regarding this theory. It was not until 1988 that scientists confirmed that house martins could enter torpor, a state of reduced activity to save energy.
Swallows vary greatly in size and physical appearance. The smallest species by weight is the Fanti sawwing, which has a mean mass of only 10 grams. In contrast, the purple martin and southern martin are the heaviest, both weighing more than 100 grams on average. Most species have glossy dark blue or green feathers on their upper bodies. Many have white or rufous, which is a reddish color, on their underparts. Tail shape also varies, ranging from square-ended to deeply forked. In barn swallows, the male's tail is 18% longer than the female's. This is a form of sexual dimorphism, where males and females look different. 
These birds occupy a wide variety of habitats and exhibit complex social behaviors. They can be found in grasslands, marshes, mangroves, and even urban areas. Some species are long-distance migrants that travel vast distances to follow food sources. Others, like the West and South African swallows, are nonmigratory. Many species are insectivorous, meaning they eat insects, though some African species eat Acacia seeds. Some swallows are social and form massive colonies. For example, a single winter-roosting site for barn swallows in Nigeria once attracted 1.5 million individuals.
Understanding swallows helps scientists study broader biological concepts like niche separation and evolution. When different species feed together, they often separate into different niches to avoid competition. This means some species feed closer to the ground while others hunt at higher altitudes. Their evolutionary history is also being refined through molecular phylogenetic studies. For instance, a 2024 study by Drew Schield and collaborators provided new data on their genus-level relationships. By studying how swallows adapt to different environments, researchers gain insight into how specialized flight and nesting behaviors evolve in the natural world.
