Auks are seabirds found in the cold Northern Hemisphere.

They belong to the family Alcidae. This family includes puffins, auklets, and murres. Most auks can fly in the sky. They must flap their wings very fast to stay up. This is because their wings are short. Their wings are a compromise. They are built for diving but also for flying.

Auks are excellent swimmers. They use their wings to move through the water. This is called pursuit diving. They hunt for food like small fish and krill. Some auks, like the murres, hunt fast fish. Others, like the auklets, eat slow krill.

These birds spend most of their lives on the open sea. They only go to land to breed. Many auks stay in pairs for their whole lives. They often lay just one egg. Some auks live in large groups on cliffs. Others make burrows, which are holes in the ground.

Auks like cold water. In warm water, their prey swims too fast to catch.
