There are about 40 species of falcons. They live on almost every continent. They are not found in Antarctica. Falcons have thin, tapered wings. These wings help them fly at high speeds. They can also change direction very fast. The Peregrine falcon is a very fast bird. It can dive at 390 kilometers per hour. This makes it the fastest creature on Earth!

Falcons have very sharp eyes. One species sees 2.6 times better than humans. They use their beaks to hunt. Most birds of prey use talons on their feet. But falcons use a special part of their beak. This is called a tomial tooth. It helps them kill their prey.

Falcons come in many sizes. The pygmy falcon is the smallest. The gyrfalcon is the largest. In many species, females are larger than males. This is called sexual dimorphism.

Some falcons are small and stocky. We call these kestrels. Other falcons are called hobbies. They often have dark gray feathers. They mostly eat smaller birds.
