Many people call them fruit bats or flying foxes. They have faces that look like dogs.

Most megabats eat fruit. Some also eat nectar from flowers. Others might eat leaves or bark.

Most megabats are active at night. Some are active at dusk. They sleep in trees or in caves. Some live in huge groups. Other species like to be alone.

Most bats use sound to see in the dark. This is called echolocation. However, most megabats cannot do this. Instead, they use their eyes and noses to find food.

Some species, like the genus Rousettus, can make clicking sounds with their tongues. This helps them move around.

Megabats have very fast bodies. Their hearts can beat over 700 times per minute while flying. This helps them stay strong in the air.

Many species are now threatened. This is because people hunt them or destroy their homes. They also have few babies. This makes it hard for their numbers to grow back quickly.
