Today, scientists use genetic data to understand how they are related. This is because their fossils are very hard to find.

Megabats have a very long history on Earth. They likely evolved in Australasia about 31 million years ago. Many lineages probably started in Melanesia before moving to Asia and Africa. As of 2018, scientists had described 197 different species of megabat. About one third of these are flying foxes from the genus Pteropus. These bats can look very different from other bats. They often have faces that look like dogs and have claws on their second digits.

Most megabats do not use echolocation to find their way. Echolocation is the way some bats use sound to "see" in the dark. Instead, megabats rely on their keen sight and smell.

They belong to the order Chiroptera, which includes all bats. These animals are also commonly called fruit bats or flying foxes, especially those in the genera Pteropus and Acerodon. Megabats are significant members of the suborder Yinpterochiroptera. They play vital roles in their ecosystems by consuming various plant materials. As of 2018, scientists had described 197 different species within this family. They are found today in tropical and subtropical regions across Africa, Eurasia, and Oceania.

Physically, megabats possess unique traits that distinguish them from other bat groups. They often have faces that resemble dogs and possess claws on their second digits. Their uropatagium, which is the membrane between the hind legs, is typically reduced.

While most megabats are large, nearly one third of all species are quite small, weighing less than 100 grams. Some of the largest species can have massive wingspans and heavy bodies. To support the intense energy needs of flight, megabats have very high metabolic rates. They maintain large lung volumes and can sustain heart rates exceeding 700 beats per minute.

Most megabats do not use laryngeal echolocation, which is the ability to emit high-frequency sounds to navigate. Instead, they rely on highly developed senses of sight and smell to locate food and move through their environments.

However, some species show interesting exceptions to this rule. Members of the genus Rousettus use primitive echolocation by clicking their tongues. Other species, such as the long-tongued fruit bat, have been observed creating clicks using their wings. This allows them to navigate without the high energy cost of traditional laryngeal echolocation. Scientists study these different methods to understand how bats evolved to sense their surroundings.

The evolutionary history of megabats is difficult to trace because their fossil record is very fragmented. It is estimated that more than 98% of their fossil history is missing. This is likely because tropical environments, where they live, are not ideal for fossilization.

Despite this, genetic data suggests they likely evolved in Australasia. The common ancestor of all living pteropodids existed approximately 31 million years ago. Many lineages likely originated in Melanesia before dispersing to mainland Asia and Africa. Some flying foxes may have even reached the Pacific islands by hopping across the Indian Ocean.

Taxonomy, or the science of naming and classifying organisms, has changed significantly for megabats. The family Pteropodidae was first described in 1821 by the British zoologist John Edward Gray. In 1875, George Edward Dobson split bats into megabats and microbats based on their body size. However, a 2001 study revealed that this size-based division did not accurately reflect evolutionary relationships. Scientists now use the suborders Yinpterochiroptera and Yangochiroptera to show true biological connections. Classification has continued to evolve as genetic testing becomes more advanced.

Megabats have specific dietary needs and reproductive patterns that affect their survival. Most are frugivorous, meaning they eat fruit, though some are nectarivorous and eat nectar. They may also consume pollen, leaves, twigs, or bark.

Their reproduction is relatively slow, with most species producing only one offspring after a pregnancy of four to six months. This low reproductive output means that populations cannot recover quickly from losses. Currently, about 25% of all megabat species are listed as threatened. This is primarily due to the destruction of their natural habitats and overhunting for food.

Beyond their ecological roles, megabats are important to the field of public health. They serve as natural reservoirs for several viruses that have the potential to affect humans.
