life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Swiftlets are small birds. They live in warm places. You can find them in Asia and Australia. Most swiftlets live in tropical areas. They have narrow wings. This helps them fly very fast. They use these wings to catch insects in the air.

Many swiftlets live in dark caves. It is hard to see in a cave. These birds use echolocation to find their way. Echolocation is a way to see using sound. The birds make clicking noises. These clicks help them fly through dark spaces. They can even find their way back to their nests.

Some swiftlets make very special nests. They do not use twigs or moss. Instead, they use their own saliva. Saliva is the spit inside a mouth. The spit turns into hard threads. These nests are very famous. People collect them to make bird's nest soup. This soup is a popular food in Asia.

Swiftlets are good parents. Both the mother and father care for the babies. They often live in large groups. They stay in the same caves for a long time. It is a busy life for these small birds.
