Swiftlet

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Swiftlets are fascinating small birds found in warm parts of the world. You can find them in southern Asia, the south Pacific islands, and northeastern Australia. These birds belong to the swift family, which means they have narrow wings for very fast flight. Most swiftlets have dull feathers that are black, brown, or gray. They have short legs that make it hard to perch on branches. Instead, their feet help them cling tightly to vertical surfaces like cave walls.

Many swiftlets live in dark caves where they sleep and raise their young. To move through the pitch-black tunnels, they use echolocation. This is a way of using sound to see where they are going. The birds make clicking noises that humans can actually hear. These clicks are made of two pulses with a tiny pause between them. When the cave gets darker, the birds change the timing of these clicks. This helps them avoid hitting obstacles in the deep, dark shafts.

Scientists have spent a long time studying how these birds are related. For a while, experts thought only the genus Aerodramus could use echolocation. However, they later found the pygmy swiftlet also makes clicking noises. Researchers use DNA to study how these species evolved over time. Some believe echolocation evolved many times on its own in different groups. Others think it might have come from an old ancestor and was lost by some birds.

Swiftlets have a very special way of building their homes. Some species do not use twigs, moss, or feathers for their nests. Instead, they use their own saliva, which is the liquid inside their mouths. This saliva forms hard, gummy threads that hold the nest together. These nests are very valuable to people in many parts of Asia. They are used to make a famous dish called bird's nest soup. Because these nests are so special, they can sell for very high prices.

These birds play a big part in the life of a cave. When swiftlets and bats leave droppings, it creates food for many other animals. This creates a tiny world inside the cave that can feed itself. You can see many swiftlets living in places like the Niah Caves in Malaysia. In the Philippines, a place called El Nido is famous for its bird's nest market. The name El Nido actually means "The Nest" in Spanish. It is a busy and important place for these small, flying wonders.
