House martins are small birds in the swallow family.

They are chunky with short tails and bull-like heads. These birds have dark blue-black feathers on their backs. They also have white or grey bellies and a white rump. The rump is the patch of feathers just above the tail.

There are four different species in this group. They live in Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa.

Most species fly south for the winter. However, the Nepal house martin stays in the Himalayas all year.

These birds are famous for how they build their homes. They make deep nests out of mud. The parents line the inside with grass or feathers.

Both parents work together to build the nest. They also take turns sitting on the eggs to keep them warm. Most nests have two or three white eggs inside.

The female usually does most of the sitting. After about 14 to 16 days, the chicks hatch. They stay in the nest for about 22 to 32 days before they fly away.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. An American naturalist named Thomas Horsfield helped name the group. He worked with a British expert named Frederic Moore in 1854. They created the name Delichon for these birds. The name is an anagram of an old Greek word for swallow. In 2021, scientists found that the Siberian house martin is its own species. They used differences in songs and body shapes to tell it apart from the common house martin.

Each species has its own special way of living. The common house martin is the largest at about 18.3 grams. The Nepal house martin is the smallest at 15 grams.

These birds hunt for food while they are flying through the air. They eat small insects like flies and aphids. This helps them avoid fighting with other birds for food. Sometimes, fast birds of prey like the hobby will try to catch them.

It is hard for these martins to escape such fast hunters.

House martins are very good at living near people. They used to live on steep cliffs. Now, many of them build their mud nests on buildings. They can even live in the middle of big cities. This works well if the air is clean enough for them. They must sometimes deal with house sparrows that try to take their nests. If a sparrow takes a nest, the martins will just build a new one elsewhere. This shows how they can adapt to new places.
