They belong to a group called Sitta. Most of these birds have large heads and short tails. They also have very strong bills and powerful feet. Many species have blue-grey or grey tops and white bellies. A common look includes a dark stripe across the eye.

These birds are very important parts of their forest homes. They help keep nature in balance by eating many things.

These birds have a very clever way of finding food.

They are omnivores, which means they eat insects, nuts, and seeds. Nuthatches climb along tree trunks and branches to find snacks. Some species even climb down trees upside-down! They look for insects hiding under the bark. When they find a large nut, they use a special trick. They wedge the nut into a crack in the tree. Then, they use their strong bills to hack at it.

A man named René-Primevère Lesson described the nuthatch family in 1828. He used the name Sittidae for them. The name Sitta comes from an Ancient Greek word. Scientists used to think the wallcreeper was a close relative. Now, they know the wallcreeper belongs to a different family. Nuthatches are also related to treecreepers and wrens. They belong to a large group called Certhioidea. This group was identified using special studies of DNA.

There are many different kinds of nuthatches in the world.

Giant nuthatch (Sitta magna)

Most live in the woods of the Northern Hemisphere. However, the most variety is found in Southern Asia. The giant nuthatch is very large at 100 mm long. On the other hand, the pygmy nuthatch is tiny. It is only about 80 mm long and weighs 8 grams. The red-breasted nuthatch lives in North America. It has a song that sounds like a tin trumpet. Some species, like the Algerian nuthatch, are very rare.

Nuthatches are very vocal birds that love to communicate.

They use many different whistles, trills, and calls. They use loud, simple songs to protect their territory. Some birds are even very smart at listening. The red-breasted nuthatch can understand the calls of chickadees. Chickadees use different sounds to talk about danger. The nuthatch can hear these tiny changes in the call. This helps the nuthatch know if a predator is near. It is like having a special way to listen to a neighbor's warning.
